How to Get US Citizenship: The Path from Green Card to Passport

Full-service naturalization after your Green Card — N-400 preparation, coaching for the English and civics tests, and support all the way to the oath ceremony. Money-back guarantee in the contract.

5 years after your Green Card

The standard path to naturalization: 5 years as a Green Card holder with at least 30 months of physical presence. You can file Form N-400 up to 90 days before your 5-year anniversary.

US passport — 180+ countries

A US passport opens visa-free entry to 180+ countries. No need to renounce your original citizenship — dual citizenship is allowed.

Voting rights and protection

Full voting rights in federal elections, access to government jobs, and US consular protection abroad. A status that cannot be taken away.

Benefits for your whole family

Sponsor your parents and siblings with no quotas. Children under 18 become citizens automatically when a parent naturalizes.

Naturalization

What US citizenship gives you and who should apply

Citizenship is the final stage of the immigration journey. A US passport opens visa-free entry to 180+ countries, voting rights, protection abroad, and freedom from the risk of losing your status. Unlike a Green Card, citizenship cannot be revoked over extended travel, tax problems, or violations — the status is yours for life.

When to apply for citizenship
  • You have held a Green Card for 5+ years (or 3 years through marriage to a US citizen).
  • You want freedom of movement — without risking your status during long trips abroad.
  • You plan to sponsor your parents or siblings for immigration.
  • You want to vote, work in government, or receive federal grants.
  • You have minor children — they will become citizens automatically.
When it is better to stay on a Green Card
  • You have not met the continuous residence requirement — trips abroad longer than 6-12 months.
  • You have unpaid taxes or unfiled returns from the past 5 years.
  • You are not confident in your English or the civics test — better to prepare and file later.
  • Your country of origin does not allow dual citizenship, and losing it would be critical.
  • You plan to serve in a foreign military or government.

USCIS requirements

7 naturalization requirements — check yourself against the list

USCIS checks 7 core requirements. All of them must be met — this is not like the O-1 “3 of 8” rule. An attorney reviews every item during the assessment and tells you whether you should wait or file Form N-400 right away.
  1. 01

Time as a Green Card holder

5 years (standard) or 3 years (spouses of US citizens still married and living together). Special timelines apply to military service members. You can file Form N-400 up to 90 days before the end of the period.

  2. 02

    Continuous Residence

No trips outside the US longer than 6 consecutive months without justification, and none longer than 1 year without a Re-entry Permit. Trips of 6-12 months require evidence that you maintained ties to the US.

  3. 03

    Physical presence

At least 30 months out of 5 years (18 out of 3 for spouses) physically in the US. USCIS counts every single day — track your trips from the very start of your residency.

  4. 04

    Good Moral Character

No criminal record, tax debt, or unpaid child support in the past 5 years (3 for spouses). Also: timely Selective Service registration for men aged 18-25.

  5. 05

    English language test

Reading, writing, and speaking at a basic level. Exemptions: age 50+/55+ with a GC for 20/15 years, or medical grounds (Form N-648). Your attorney prepares you for the test.

  6. 06

Civics Test — US history and government

An open bank of 100 questions. At the interview the officer asks 10 — you need at least 6 correct answers. Age 65+ with a GC for 20+ years — a simplified version (20 questions).

  7. 07

    Oath of Allegiance

The final step: a solemn oath of loyalty to the United States at a ceremony. Renouncing foreign titles and obligations. Readiness to defend the Constitution. After the oath — your US passport.

Average naturalization time (N-400) is 8-12 months. Up to 14 months in the busiest states, from 6 in less crowded ones.

StageTimeframe

Filing with USCIS + biometrics2-8 weeks
Waiting for the interview4-10 months
Interview + tests at USCIS1 day

Three-stage document review

Interview and test preparation

Interview and test preparation

Coaching for the English test, the civics test, and the conversation with the USCIS officer. Mock interviews. We stay in touch until the oath — and after you receive your US passport.

Don't wait

Start your path to citizenship today — later it only gets harder and slower

Processing times keep growing

USCIS queues are getting longer. In New York and California the wait for an interview is already 10-14 months. Every month you delay filing adds a month to the end of your total timeline.

Naturalization rules are tightening

USCIS is revising the civics test and good moral character requirements. 2024 cases are reviewed more strictly than 2022 ones. 2026 filings already run under the updated rules.

A Green Card is not forever

Long trips abroad, tax problems, or violations can put your Green Card at risk. Citizenship cannot be lost, and deportation becomes impossible. Every year at risk is a year without protection.

Your children are growing up — the window is closing

Children under 18 become citizens automatically when a parent naturalizes. Once a child turns 18, they go through the process on their own: their own N-400, their own wait, their own tests.
